Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney was laid to rest Tuesday as thousands, including former President Barrack Obama, paid their final respects.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Oakland for Rooney, according to WPXI.
Obama was not expected to speak or attend any other events. Steelers’ quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones also attended the ceremony for Rooney, who died last Thursday, WPXI reports.
“Dan Rooney was a great friend of mine, but more importantly, he was a great friend to the people of Pittsburgh, a model citizen, and someone who represented the United States with dignity and grace on the world stage,” the former president wrote in a statement, WPXI reports.
Rooney was named U.S. Ambassador to Ireland in 2009. He served in the role, given to him by Obama, for three years.
A funeral procession to the cemetery for interment took place following the service.
